This is a momentous occasion for which I have waited many years. I hired an architect to design a stairway. As you can see from this picture of the old stairs, there is no headroom at the bottom of the stairs.
To fix this, the architect designed a stair winder solution that made a 90 degree turn to the left. The current path of the stairs was a non-starter because that beam by my head supports the entire house — can’t cut it. There also meant I had to forfeit some floorspace in my kitchen, which is where my fridge stood.

Halfway Done
Final Product
The cost was less than anticipated: architect: $350, materials: $284, capenter: $500
The carpenter was fantastic. He is going to install a new and proper exterior door (you can see the old on in the picture above) and frame out my basement windows.

Wow! The stairs look absolutely fabulous, Chris. You got them finished so incredibly quickly. What kind of exterior door are you planning to install?
Great job,
Amy

Gee Chris, Wow does this look great! Can’t wait to use the stairs. I am tickled you can now start on the basement and have fun doing it. The stairs are terrific. Hope the refrigerator is working out for you — the placement. My, but you have done a lot since moving in. Just went over everything you have done! Love you. Will keep posted. Mom

Chris, I must say that you look like a total stud with that shadow of a beard and brown “work” clothes. You were just posing, right? Your stairs look impressive. That is so cool what you did. However, just for the record, some of us (under 5′ 8″) didn’t have a whole lot of issues with the old stair! Your basement looks awesome. I can’t wait to come out and see it in person. Norm
